Welcome to Martin HallBy Maryanne Reed, Dean
Welcome to the West Virginia University P.I. Reed School of Journalism. A journalism degree is your ticket to a rewarding career and an exciting future.
Imagine a profession that allows you to fly in a hot air balloon one day and cover a presidential visit to your town the next. Or imagine having the skills to plan a public relations campaign for a Fortune 500 company or produce the next hit commercial for a Madison Avenue advertising agency.
Our graduates have gone on to highly successful careers in journalism and communications fields as award-winning journalists, advertising executives, documentary producers, and corporate presidents. And you can follow in their footsteps. We will help you reach your dreams by giving you the skills, the contacts and the support you need to be successful in advertising, broadcast news, news-editorial, public relations or integrated marketing communications.
Ninety-eight percent of our graduates have a job or are enrolled in a master's program within one year after they graduate. Our students get jobs because they are well prepared. Our innovative curriculum and personalized instruction, along with our emphasis on real-world learning and internships, help our graduates succeed in a very competitive market.
The School of Journalism offers an accredited undergraduate program and two master's degree programs, including the country's first totally online Integrated Marketing Communications Master's program.
We offer a hands-on curriculum that gives students a strong academic foundation and valuable professional experience. As part of that curriculum, students produce TV news stories for the Pittsburgh-TV market, produce newscasts that air on West Virginia Public Television and cover stories as bureau reporters for major newspapers throughout state and region. Our students produce advertising and public relations campaigns for local companies and nonprofit organizations.
Our students also work on special projects, including an Emmy Award-winning documentary and nationally acclaimed book profiling the lives of cancer patients, as well as a multimedia website chronicling the stories of Hurricane Katrina evacuees who relocated to West Virginia after the storm.
Our courses are taught by talented and dedicated faculty – current and former journalists and executives – who bring to the classroom years of professional experience. Our faculty include a George Polk award-winning investigative journalist, a former Associated Press Special Correspondent who covered the Vietnam and Gulf Wars, published authors, photojournalists, graphic designers, advertising executives and documentary producers.
At the School of Journalism, you will never be just a number. Once you are accepted into our program, you will become part of our close-knit journalism family.
Our Internship Coordinator will help you find rewarding real-world experiences. Other faculty and staff members will provide guidance and tips during your job search and opportunities to network with industry professionals.
You will receive one-on-one advising and mentoring and will work as part of a team with your professors and classmates. We consider our students to be our greatest asset, and we will do everything we can to make your experience meaningful and memorable.
Journalism is both a craft and a calling. The P.I. Reed School of Journalism will help launch your careers and dreams, and we will help you find your passion for doing journalism that matters.
