What Is It?

SOJ undergraduate students can now earn a Certificate of Digital Proficiency (CoDP). The CoDP shows you’ve learned the skills needed to communicate in a digital world: design, video, blogging and more! It’s a way to add practical tools to your experience so you can hit the ground running at your first internship or job.

Why Earn It?

The CoDP is a supplement to your SOJ diploma that shows you’ve developed specific skills in multiple areas of digital communications. The program helps you to develop those basic skills through one-credit courses that can fit into your schedule and two three-credit courses (one of which is already required).

How Do I Start?

To earn the CoDP, students need to take VISJ 210 Visual Communication and three of the following one-credit courses:

  • JRL 293I Media Graphics & Photography
  • JRL 293J Online Publishing Tools
  • JRL 293K Audio/Video Tools
  • TVJ 488 TV Editing (Final Cut)

Students will also need to take two three-credit course from the following list:

  • ADV 451 Interactive Marketing
  • JRL 456 West Virginia Uncovered
  • JRL 459 Multimedia Reporting
  • JRL 593H Graphics & Data Journalism
  • PR 319 Editing & Design
  • PR 333 Intro to Web Design
  • VISJ 220 Intro to Photojournalism
  • VISJ 431 Multimedia Reporting

All courses must be completed with a GPA of 3.0 or better to be eligible for the CoDP.
