While they are still in school, Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism (SOJ) students gain real-world, professional experiences that prepare them for careers in 21st century mass communications.
Dedicated to providing innovative opportunities along with a strong foundation in traditional media skills, the SOJ has developed a niche for specialized, multimedia projects. Our include hands-on opportunities for students to work across media disciplines and platforms and to reach out to the larger, regional community.
Check out the “Featured Projects” area on the SOJ homepage to learn more about specific projects.
Internship opportunities result from the SOJ’s strong relationships with the nation’s top media organizations—many of which are owned or operated by SOJ friends and alumni. The networking opportunities and associations interns develop last a lifetime. Past SOJ students have had highly successful internships at a number of organizations including:
Typically, students choose to do an internship for course credit because the employer requires it, or the student needs the elective journalism credit(s). Students who elect to do an internship for credit must see the SOJ Student Services Coordinator to be signed into JRL 441 (3-credits, typically done in the summer) or JRL 442 (1-2 credits) and complete an Internship/Practicum Contract. Students cannot receive credit retroactively, per school policy. One hundred hours of work equals one credit hour. The course is graded pass/fail.
For more information about internship opportunities, please see our Internship FAQs or contact Student Services Coordinator Jason Broadwater at 304-293-3505, ext. 5402.
The SOJ helps current students and graduates connect with employers from around the state, region and nation.
Our Post a Job site allows employers to upload information regarding employment opportunities. Those jobs are then included in our online SOJ eNews, which is updated regularly.
We encourage SOJ students to start looking early to gain a better understanding of the job market they’ll be entering.
